Literature

The scenic landscape and natural environment of Mull has inspired many locals to take up writing, as well as published contemporary writers and poets to visit. Some find it so hard to leave, they set up home.

The Ross of Mull Poets are very active, with several other poets and authors of fiction dispersed around the islands. Local writers also publish excellent guides on the various unique aspects of enjoying and exploring the islands. Books on subjects from wildlife, nature, walking, archaeology and history to fine dining and geology are to be found in the bookshops in Tobermory and Fionnphort.

The annual book festival in Tobermory “West over Sea” is a wonderful boost to literary life on the islands, bringing in notable writers to inspire gatherings of folk from remote island areas to exchange thoughts and ideas.

Both Mull Theatre and An Tobar in Tobermory may include writing and poetry in their programmes, while Knockvologan Studies in the Ross of Mull is an exciting new arts venue hosting a residency programme. Information about individual poets and authors, as well as groups, can be found in the Artists Directory while the Events Listing displays a calendar of upcoming programmes as well as opportunities to take part in creative writing workshops and classes.
